Cats In Izmir

Cats in Izmir

For centuries, Turkey has faced the problem of stray cats and dogs. Izmir is known for its overpopulation of cats. You can find them in every street, walk path, storefronts and sometimes even restaurants. People have tried to solve this never ending problem with petitions to the government and projects that will help stabilize the population of cats. Because of the wide number of  cats, many of them do not get the correct health care and shots which result in them getting diseases and harming people. Also, because they are forced to live in the streets they have to bare and get used to the weather conditions. In the hot summer, they have to find shade and struggle to find water. And in the winter, they have to find somewhere to keep warm and dry. This is a problem because it is hard to keep so many cats health and feed. In the community of people in Izmir, their are people that try to help the cats by putting out their food leftovers and water however this is just a short-term solution and not a long-term one. The cat number continues to rise and is a rising problem. If the problem is not solved that the situation will only get worse.

Variety of Food Selection at ACI

If you are look for a school that has not only great education but excellent food than ACI is the place to be. ACI has a wide range of food selections for all students. Five days a week students can decide on where and what they want to eat around campus. They can decide weather they would like to sit inside the school cafeteria which as plenty of space and has big windows that illuminate the dining hall. Or they can take there food from the co-op, and sit outside in the garden on the many picnic tables and benches or our spacious aphe. In the cafeteria there is a selection of two different meals. Each is a two course meal with a dessert or fruit for dessert. In the Co-op the students have a selection of turkish pizza which is called pide where they can pick their toppings beforehand and pick it up on the break. This also works with individually made salads. Students write down their salad toppings and receive their specialized healthy lunch. There is also a turkish döner that is sold every day that varies from chicken to beef. Also in the canteen they sell many snack, fruit and ice-cream. Students can buy all these things with the efficient card situm. Students load money on to their school cards and then just swipe when they want to buy something.

An Accomplishment Of Mine

First Term Accomplishment

.                                             MUN_logo

Personally this first term of Prep was a very different experience for me and I believe that I did my best in most subjects. Maybe once or twice I forgot to hand in my homework or looked at my phone in class but other than those things I believe I learned and accomplished a lot in my education this term of my school. However there is a club I joined at the beginning of the year called Model United Nations that in my opinion I have put lots of effort into. It is club were you debate very important world issues and defend the country you are the delegate of.

I knew about MUN because I was in Junior Model United Nations in middle school that was similar to MUN but much easier. JMUN gave me many experiences such as going to conferences in İstanbul, Adana and Paris. I wanted to keep my MUN career going and have more experience. I got to meet so many people from all around the world and see many places that I would never have the opportunity to do so in any other club. That is why joining the club was very important to me.

On the second or third week of school I had to go in an exam that would see if I would be able to get into the club or not. I had to study facts and information about the united nations and learn and watch the news to see what was happening in the world. They asked many questions about old and new problems that have affected people and countries around the world. It was a very hard exam that many people struggled with. I also thought it was hard but I was able to fill out most of it.

After about a week they announced the results and I got it. I was very happy that I was on the list. On the first day of the club everybody was very nervous because everybody was new and did not know what to expect. They explained that MUN is a very serious club that works a lot more than most clubs. And it’s very true. On Wednesday and Thursday we have to stay after school for three hours each day. During those three hours we debate a resolution which is a bunch of ways to solve an important problem. Getting up and making a speech about something in front of fifty is very scary but this club has made much more confident in public speaking.

At the end of the first month they picked twenty students that worked the hardest and debated the most and they would be going to be going to the Turkish İnternational Model United Nations conference. I was on the list and I was incredibly happy. The Conference went incredibly well and went by very successfully. Then they chose the ones who were going to go to The Hague International Conference which is one of the biggest MUN conferences in the world. Luckily I got picked and will be going to The Hague during the semester break.

I am very lucky to be able to go on trips like this and experience so many thing. I worked very hard and is a very big achievement for me. MUN has helped me with writing essays and doing presentations which also will help in my future education in high school and in every aspect of  my life.

Reflection on the Short Story Unit

Reflection On The Short Story Unite

During the short story unite I had lots of fun reading all different types of short stories and discussing them with our class when we had circle time. Normally I only read long stories that are up to more than 200 pages, but during this unite I got to experience stories in a different way. It is interesting how authors can fit an idea into only two pages or less. While writing my first story I had the struggle with trying to fit and idea into a few pages. I really liked writing about an idea ı came up with and seeing it on paper. I feel that I have learned many thing during this unit about how to and not to write a short story.

In the end I am happy that I got to learn so much from this unit.

Response

After reading the story I felt very bad for Teddy. His Aunt and Uncle ruined his imagination and his view on his made up world in the attic. For Teddy the imaginary world he made up was very important to him because he had come to a point were he thought the world he made was actually real. After they made fun of him for playing with paper dolls all the fun and excitement was lost for him when he went back up to the attic.

This is probably something that happens all the time to children. Adults making jokes about how their children are being creative or older siblings laughing at how their younger siblings spend their time.

I think it is not fair for people to ruin children’s creativity. The children of today are the ones that are going to have to come up with new ideas on how to better our world. If they are turned into dull thinkers then the future of the world and people living on it will not be very bright.

The Big Snit – Response

The story takes place in a home of a husband and wife, they are playing a scrabble game and then they  start to have an argument about it. During this time there is a nuclear bomb that is about to go off but they are not aware of it because they are not paying attention to the tv or what is happening outside. I like how the video ends because they make up and stop fighting. When they walk outside it is obvious that they are in heaven. This way they both died happy together.

Final thoughts on the Lottery

I was very shocked to have read the ending of the Lottery. I now understand that the author made the beginning of the short story boring so there would be a shocking ending. The author foreshadowed the ending of the story by adding small hints at the beginning such as the village children gathering stones and the crowd being very tense.

The story resembles war because we know that it is a bad idea but we keep doing it just like the tradition of the lottery in the village.

Fog, Fire and Ice

Fog, Fire and Ice
After reading both poems and learning to analyze them, it became much easier to understand them. When we first read Fire and Ice in class I would have never expected that it would be about two elements that represent the destruction of the world. I think it is very clever how the poet used the two elements. It explains that both elements are distrustful and can cause a lot of damage.

Fire becomes a metaphor for human desire and Ice works as a metaphor for hatred. The poem also is like two people arguing about the power that humans have to destroy one another. It seems like the people arguing in the poem do not think there is any other option, they only think that the world is going to be destroyed with one of the elements. I think that this poem would be hard for some people to understand if they don’t know how to analyze it correctly, like me when we started the poetry topic. Also, this goes for The Fog poem. The meaning of fire, ice and fog has not changed for me. They kind of change a little metaphorically but thats all. In the Fog poem, the poet was comparing the fog to a cat. The fog sits and watches over the harbor just like a cat would do. Most of the time there is a comparison to a cat.

I think fire and ice is more powerful because the poem is about the end of the world and I think that that is more interesting than fog and cats; also I think it is a little harder to analyze than the fog poem.
